Meet Demi

Veteran. Mother. Grandmother. Small Business Woman.

Demi Kouzounas embodies the American Dream—a dream she sees in decline across Maine and America.

Born and raised in Saco, Maine, Demi is the first of four daughters to hardworking Greek immigrants. As a young girl, she spent her summers working at her parents’ restaurant, Venetia’s in Old Orchard Beach, a community meeting place for 52 years. There, she washed dishes, bussed, and waited tables, and helped in the kitchen, learning the value of hard work and witnessing the struggles and rewards of running a small business.

Demi became the first in her family to attend college, graduating from the University of Maine at Orono, and later earned a Doctorate in Dentistry from Tufts University. After graduation, Demi enlisted in the United States Army, serving overseas in Germany during the Cold War with her husband Joe. This experience deeply influenced her sense of duty and patriotism, reinforcing her commitment to serving her country.

Upon completing their military service, Demi and Joe returned to Maine with their four-month-old Nichol and opened two dental practices in Skowhegan and Scarborough, as well as a neighborhood community mall. As a small business owner, Demi understands the critical role small businesses play as the backbone of our economy.

Demi is humbled by the limitless opportunities afforded to her by this great country and the great people of Maine. This realization and gratitude have always driven her towards a life of service. With the Saco Baptist Church, she went on nine trips treating Haitian migrant workers without access to basic health and dental care. She co-founded Dentists Who Care for Maine and facilitated the start of Bright Smiles, a children’s dental program. Demi later served as President of the Maine Dental Association, advocating for greater access to dental care for low-income families and rural communities. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of New England dental school, where she has trained 25 fourth-year dental students who have since graduated and become dentists.

As a mother and grandmother, Demi is acutely aware of how inflation and economic instability impact the everyday lives of Maine families. She is dedicated to implementing policies that address these challenges and support working families. Her life experiences have given her a unique perspective and a deep understanding of the issues that matter most to Mainers.
